About Me
I Am My Father's Daughter

Growing up in a house full of girls, I unofficially took on the role as my father's only son. So when the time came to fix a leaky sink or change the oil in the family car, it was me that stood by my father's side. Thanks to him and everything he taught me, I am now able to take care of myself and my children in a way that not everyone can. I have tried over the years to engage my own daughter in the same way my father engaged me, but she's currently more interested in playing with dolls than fixing potholes. After my father passed away last year, I vowed to find a way to pass on everything he taught me, this blog is my way of keeping that promise. I truly hope that you learn as much as I have over the years.

Four Ways To Give Your Kitchen An Urban Update

Beatrice Reid

For a sleek, modern look in your kitchen, you may want to opt for an urban theme in your kitchen. There are lots of great ways to put this theme to work in your kitchen, so consider any or all of these options to give your space a spectacular makeover.

Urban-Styled Cabinets

One way to quickly give your kitchen a new look is to replace your cabinets. Your contractor can either re-face your cabinets or replace them completely to create this transformation. For an urban look, consider cabinets with a slate gray finish or opt for dark-finished cabinets with a distressed look to them. Add silver-toned metal hardware for a handsome finishing touch.

To add a unique look to the space, have your contractor finish some of the cabinets without adding a door, which provides a handy place for displaying your best china or a few decorative objects.

Metal Countertops

replacing your traditional counters with metal countertops can give your kitchen an urban industrial feel. The counters are also easy to clean and coordinate well with modern stainless steel appliances. To create a coordinated look, consider adding a pub-height table with a metal top which can further push the urban look.

Wood Flooring

Kitchen floors don't have to be tile. Wood flooring in the kitchen can bring a sleek look to your urban kitchen. Choose a light wood with a light or gray finish to coordinate with your urban-styled cabinets and metal countertops. You can also play with the pattern of the wood flooring to create a unique design on the floor. A herringbone pattern, for example, can draw the eye into your kitchen to make it appear larger.

The finishing touches are just as important as the renovations you will make to your space. Consider adding metal stools to your breakfast bar, and talk to your contractor about installing pendant lighting over your kitchen island and breakfast bar. Metal baker's racks offer convenient storage for cookware or packaged foods, and they coordinate beautifully with an urban theme. Look for minimalist designs in your lighting, stools, and other accessories. With urban setups, less tends to be more.

When you meet with your contractor, be sure to discuss your vision for your urban kitchen. In many cases, contractors can add a few of their own ideas based on previous projects, which can help you to create a stunning kitchen you'll be proud to show off to your friends and family. For more information, contact local professionals like Luxcucina.
